Yes and usually, though not always in the early days when not many Australians knew what stage-diving was. The venues I attended were usually pretty small with low stages so it wasn’t such a big deal.
At a 1983 Iggy Pop gig he dived and the crowd leapt out of the way. I didn’t see him hit the floor but I sure heard it. I could have warned him about that.
I used to see the Lime Spiders a fair bit. This clip shows the sort of venues and stage dives that were typical in 1980s Sydney.

Yeah, I think I’m starting to get the gist of your musical taste. Not all that different from mine it seems.
Sadly the only truly great goth band Australia has produced is The Birthday Party. Keep your eyes open for the newly released doco about them Mutiny in Heaven. If there’s any live stuff from their Sydney gigs you may even see me in the audience. I got a great crowd surf at one of their Trade Union Club concerts.
My great goth infatuation of the past five years has been Tanya Tagaq, the Inuit angakuqq. You can google her but me know if you want me to send you some particularly good examples of her stuff. Her semi-autobiographical novel, Split Tooth is awesomely dark and unique magic realism.
